Oakland officials are pushing back against potential plans by President Trump to send National Guard troops to the city. Trump this week mentioned the idea of sending such troops to Oakland, saying that Oakland has been overtaken by crime and local authorities haven’t done enough in the name of public safety.
Mayor Barbara Lee says city officials will fight any such move, saying “we are not going to allow a military occupation of this city.” She claims Oakland just recently noted a double-digit drop in violent crimes.
